Binding Style Explained
  • Perfect bound - Paperback books with single sided digitally printed card cover ideal for novels and journals. They are library quality, bound with strong glue and have a creased cover and straight spine
  • Case Bound PPC - Hardback books with digitally printed colour paper case, optional dust cover jackets available, this is a premium product that turns heads and says 'quality'
  • Case Bound Cloth - Hardback books with Wibalin-style cases, optional foil blocking and dust cover jackets available, this is the de-luxe end of the book market
  • Wire-O bound - punched and wired using white wires with single-sided digitally printed cover ideal for books which need to lay flat when open, such as cook books, diaries or musical scores.
  • Saddle-stitch - stapled booklets with single-sided digitally printed paper cover and ideal for booklets of up to 48 pages. Available in all of our papers and either colour or black-and-white
  • Spiral bound - punched and wired using white wires with single-sided digitally printed cover ideal for documents where opening back on themselves or laying flat on a desk or table is desirable, ideal for publications such as work-books, journals, and guidebooks
Lamination

We recommend choosing a type of lamination for your order, as without protection colours may rub off along the folds and edges. Matt and Gloss lamination provide a high quality finish and stops paper-print cracking. Covers with solid deep colours (for example but not limited to black, purple), have a tendency to accentuate minor scuffs and scratches on laminated covers. We have put every effort into reducing such marks during the production process but for the best results we recommend using non-scuff velvet laminate.

Book Pages

Standard Mono or Photo Quality Colour Printing are our most popular choices, however we also offer Mono Printing with up to 20 percent colour page inserts. Photo Quality Mono Printing is produced using black ink on our Indigo digital presses onto a variety of paper stocks. Low ink coverage are specially designed solutions which only apply to jobs which have a total ink coverage of under 20 percent - please contact us to ensure that this applies to your order.

Number of Pages

Page count refers to the number of sides (both printed and unprinted). It is double the quantity of sheets. All quotes are priced for double sided printing, if you require single sided printing, please contact us directly.

Choosing Paper Stock

We offer a variety of paper stocks depending on the printing or finishing process chosen.

Finished Size

We offer a variety of fixed sizes, or the option for you to choose a custom size (however additional charges will apply for custom sizes)

Proofing your Order
  • Digital PDF Proof - We will e-mail you a copy of how your book is likely to appear; this is not recommended for colour.
  • Loose leaf proof - As you want to know how your book will look and feel, we will send you a copy produced on the same machinery and using the same stock(s) of paper/card. The pages will not be glued in place and the cover will not be laminated or foil blocked for hardback books.
  • Bound proof - We will send you a copy produced on the same machinery and using the same stock(s) of paper/card, this will be a fully finished copy as the pages will be glued in place but the cover will not be laminated or foil blocked for hardback books.
  • No proof required - Not advisable. A proof is your way of finding out whether the files print as you expect them to do.
File Supply

We print from nothing but PDF files and therefore it's recommended as the best option to supply your files, however we do offer design and prepress services alongside scanning solutions.

If supplying PDF files, please ensure that the files conform to the Standard PDF/X-1a:2001, ensuring that all fonts are embedded and setup according to our file specification guidelines.

Scanning Services
  • Existing hardcopy: B+W text scanning required - We offer a service to scan the black and white text supplied and then convert to PDF.
  • Existing hardcopy: B+W text and image scanning required - We offer a service to scan the black and white text and halftone images supplied and then convert to PDF. There's no limit to the number of pages that can be scanned but gray scale images are charged at £1 per page.
  • Existing hardcopy: Colour scanning required - We offer a service to scan the full colour text and images supplied and then convert to PDF.
  • The scanning services are extra and therefore will incur extra charges, PDF files are recommended.

Cover Design Service

Cover Design Bespoke - We have a talented and imaginative design team keen and eager to create an eye-catching cover for your book, to your own specifications

Cover Design Standard - If you are on a limited budget, how about one of our standard cover designs instead of a bespoke design? Please click here for the options.

Cover Design Plain Colour - If you simply want your book title and author's name on a plain background, we can achieve that in any style of lettering on any background colour (excluding metallic colours).

Legal Despatch Service (UK)

It is a legal requirement for six copies of every printed book to be sent to deposit libraries around the UK. We can save you the effort by sending six of the copies from your order to the relevant addresses.

ISBN Barcode Generation

If your book is intended for sale rather than personal use, an ISBN (International Standard book Number) is thoroughly recommended. ISBNs are available in the UK (in batches of 10 or more) from Nielsen Bookdata but it is well worth considering our publishing options (www.fast-print.net) before purchasing a batch. If you have your own ISBN, we can generate a barcode for the back cover of your book using that number.
